Evan Lilly, who bought three of the lots in Combs Square from Joshua Frost for building purposes, sold one of them, with extra

frontage, in January, 1845, to Wm. B. Emmal. The deal evidently included Lilly's erecting this attractive house.

Lilly had just come to Lexington (1844) from Baltimore, Md., where he married Miss Margaret Ann McCarter. He was a

bricklayer and engaged in contracting upon arrival in Lexington, employing 50 to 60 men for some 16 years. He made the brick

for the buildings he erected, which included the Main St. Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, Baptist College and (with

John C. Young) the Broadway Christian Church. He engaged in woolen manufacturing with George Wooley for two years and

more, had a coal yard and later a grocery.

W. B. Emmal and wife, Catherine S., after residing here for nearly 20 years, sold the house at a handsome price to D.D.

Laudeman in May, 1864.

She was graduated from Sayre Female Inst., Lexington, KY, in 1863 (Sayre School is an

independent co-educational

college preparatory school

serving students from

pre-kindergarten through

twelfth grade in the

educational tradition of the

school's founder and

namesake, David A Sayre.

In 1854, David A. Sayre

established Sayre School to

provide an "education of the

widest range and highest

order." Today, we honor that

mission by enabling students

to become knowledgeable,

productive, and contributing

members of the community.

Fully accredited, Sayre is

located at 194 N. Limestone

St. in the heart of downtown

Lexington, Kentucky.

David A. Sayre was born

March 12,1793, near

Madison, New Jersey.

Arriving in Lexington in 1811,

as a poor apprentice

silversmith, he was later able

to become his own master

and eventually expand

successfully into banking.

(painting from the cover of All Rise)

David A. Sayre

Accumulating a large fortune, most of

which went to the Presbyterian

Church and various charities, Mr.

Sayre founded the school for girls in

November 1854. The school was first

organized as the Transylvania Female

Seminary and was located on the

corner of Mill and Church Streets. In

March of 1856, the school was

renamed the Sayre Female Institute

and moved to its present location, a

five acre tract that included two small

houses and a brick mansion.

Since then, the school has continued to grow and expand, although it has

had its moments of crisis - most notably during the Civil War and in the late

1940's. In 1876, boys were first admitted to the Primary Department. For a

short time it became a small college with a two year course of study (the first

graduating class was in 1908). The college curriculum was discontinued in

1922.

In 1961, the Board of Trustees, seeing Lexington's need for a college

preparatory school, launched a campaign to raise the funds needed to build a

gymnasium and an Upper School building. As a result, the C.V. Whitney

Gymnasium and the Headley-de Waal Building were built in 1962 and 1963.

The first class of the "New Era" graduated from the new Upper School in

1965. Further additions to the campus were the Marie Louise Whitney Lower

School Building (1971), the Edward F. Simms Library (1973), the

Johnson-McCoy Building (1980), the Violet Milton Price Combs Garden

(1980), the Field Oldham Playground (1984), the Edith A. Whitaker Fine

Arts Center (1987), and the Middle School (1987). Since 1965, the first

class of Sayre's "New Era," over one thousand young men and women have

graduated from Sayre). Listed in the in 1870 Census in Covington, Kenton, KY (1870 > Kentucky > KENTON > 4-WD COVINGTON Series: M593 Roll: 478 Page: 249
