He, Amanda and Dennis were later removed to the Pioneer mausoleum in Woodlawn

He moved to Shaghticoke, Rensselaer, NY, "where he attended school for two years" in 1840.1287 He moved to Paterson, Passaic, NJ, where he clerked in a jewelry store in 1843.1288 At age 18, joined the whaler America, Captain Adams, as a "greenhand". The crew list does not show his first name, age or a physical description. There were no other Magarys accompanying him. Captain Adams had left from Maui on 13 Nov 1847 on the Satira bound
for cruising and New Bedford. The America, 418 tons, Master Crowell, had left Maui on 14 Sep 1847 bound for cruising. The Bush Makee Shipping List for Maui for 1848 is incomplete and shows no pertinent records on 23 Oct 1848 New Bedford.1289,1290,1291 "He left [the America], however, at Mowee, Sandwich Is., having heard of the discovery of gold in California. He crossed the Pacific in a little schooner flying the Hawaiian flag and reached San Francisco on the 22nd day of September, 1849." A seperate listing in the Pioneer Society (Archiver M-R, Vol 3) identifies the Hawaiian schooner as the Caroline. (The Caroline may have been the same vessel as operated by the American Board of Foreign Missions which sailed to Micronesia in 1852.)
We have not found a shipping notice confirming the arrival of the Caroline on 22 Sep 1849 (so far, only in 1853), but on that date, a "Mining Company ship America, 464 tons, built in 1811 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built 1848 in Baltimore, Maryland. Sailed from New Bedford, Massachusetts on April 1, 1849, under command of Captain Seabury with 75 passengers. After 160 days, and a passage via Cape Horn, with stops at St. Catherine's and Callao, she arrived in San Francisco."1292 Express messenger for Adams & Co. on San Francisco Bay and American River steamers in 1851.1293 1852: John:Listed on board the 'Isthmus' (Capt. The company failed nine months later. The Louisiana-Tehuantepec Co. began operation with a postal contract in September, 1858.
