Huldah Horton
Huldah Horton died at her home in Horton, October 24, 1895, aged 94
years and 10 months. The funeral was held fom the house on the
following Saturday, Rev. J. W. Carter of Roscoe, officiating. The text
chosen for the occasion was from Psalms, 35th chapter, and the last half
of the fourteenth verse.
A large number of relatives and friends were present, among whom were
Webb Horton and wife, of Middletown, and Mrs. Emily Darbee, of
Rockland. The remains were laid to rest in the Horton cemetery.
Deceased was born in Coldenham, Orange county, December 29, 1800. Her
father, Henry Radeker, was what was called an extensive farmer in those
days, and she with the rest of the family were brought up to know the
duties of farm life in early days. She was one of the chosen few in a
grand parade on horseback at Newburg in 1824, at the welcome of General
Lafayette in his last visit to the country. [Her participation in this event was noted in David Collins Horton letters] She was married to David
Horton in 1825, and moved to Horton from Liberty, in 1832, [but kids born before 1832 say they were born in Hortons or Colchester]
covering a
period of 63 years under one roof. She was one of the first permanent
settlers in the lower Beaverkill country, which at that time was a wild,
unbroken forest.
Nine children survive her, six sons and three daughters; also 49
grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Horton belonged to no
church, but had her own religious views as a free thinker, and her only
desire was in being generous, honest and doing good. Since the death of
her husband David Horton, in 1879, she has lived with her second oldest
son, and up to her last sickness looked after her household duties with
an unflinching hand. Mrs. A. S. Landfield, of Middletown, and Mrs.
Elias Mitchell, of Callicoon, her two daughters, faithfully attended her
in her last sickness, till the light went out);1471,1472 she was buried Horton Cem., Horton, Delaware, NY, 26 Oct 1895.1473

MRS. HORTON'S DEATH IS LOSS TO COMMUNITY
----------------------------------------------
A NOBLE HEARTED WOMAN
----------------------------------------------
Had Been Deeply Interested in Religious and
Philanthropic Work Since Youth
_______________________

Mrs. Elizabeh Ann Horton, the widow of the late Webb Horton, died of bronchial pneumonia, after a brief illness at her
home 115 South street, Saturday morning, March 24th at 9:15 at the advanced age of eighty-four.
Mrs. Horton was born March 25th, 1833, in the town of Montgomery, three miles from the village of the same name. Her
father was Henry Radeker and her mother Rachael (Taylor) Radeker. She was the oldest of nine children, only two of
whom survive her. Her grandfathers were of Revolutionary fame, the one on the maternal side, serving for more than
seven years during the war.
She is survived by one son, Eugene Horton; two brothers, George H. Radeker of New Windsor near Coldingham, and C.
W. R. Radeker of Parkersburgh, West Virginia. Also by two nieces, Miss Carrie Elizabeth and Miss Ruth and two nephews,
Junius R. H. and Walter Scott, the four children of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Radeker.
Her early life was spent at the old homestead in the town of Montgomery. She was educated at the Goodwill school, Rural
Academy, and Montgomery Academy, the latter under the charge of the late D. Kerr Bull. During these years, she united
with the Dutch Reformed church of Berea, under pastorate of Rev. James B. Ten Eyck and in later years, through
liberality, services were maintained in this old church until the population so changed that is was useless longer to keep
the church open.
On the 28th of August 1855, she was married to the late Webb Horton. Together they wrought in mutual aid for more than
half a century and together they made their home a model of domestic life. Just before his marriage, Mr. Horton became
interested in the leather business. He and his young bride established their first home at Damascus, Wayne County,
Pennsylvania, just across the Delaware River from Narrowsburgh. It was a new counrty, many hardhsips had to be
endured.
But Mrs. Horton delighted to tell of the experience of those days. She enjoyed not only making her own home comfortable,
but also did all she could for those about her, and assisted in the little church that had just been organized in the comunity.
It was here that her three children were born: Eugene, Junius Ray, and Carrie Elizabeth.
In '64, Mr. Horton had an opportunity to dispose of his interests in the Tannery at Damascus, purchased a track of hemlock
forests at Sheffield, Pennsylvania. He moved there with his family in the winter of '65. the privileges that the country
afforded were most meagre. Again Mrs. Horton became interested in religious and philanthropic work and with the other
women of the sparely settled community, she did more than her share in the establishment of another litle church that was
the minister to the spiritual needs of the people. She delighted to tell how all labored together that the place might enjoy
these religious privileges. It was a joy to her to be of service to those with whom she was associated.
Need of educational facilities for the children led the late Webb Horton to move his family to Middletown in '66. This has
since been their home. For a number of years, the father was compelled to be away, looking after the business interests,
and the duty of the father and mother fell upon Mrs. Horton. It was here that her family grew up. For forty-eight years they
have made their home in this city.
Junius Ray while at Prepatory School, Poughkeepsie, was stricken with typhoid fever and on March 3, 1879, died at his
home in this city. The husband with whom Mrs. Horton labored so long was called on the 14th day of September 1908.
Furthe sorrow came to her when two years later her only daughter was summoned after an operation in New York City; but
this sorrow, as deep as it was, destroyed neither her faith nor her courage. Her son, Eugene, survives her, and has been
her constant help during the latter years of her life.
Her home was always her first consideration. During the early years in new countries, the demands on her were often
great. A faithful wife and mother at all times, with her husband and children, she met the privation of those early days in
new countries and they prospered.
With fortunate circumstances of later life, her home still remained the center of her affection, and when sorrow came, and
those she loved were taken away, she bore it with a fortitude that was remarkable; but her love of her home did not by any
means destroy her interest and her sympathy in those about her.
She was a member of the old Second Presbyterian Church and as long as health permitted, was active in its work, though
not privileged in latter years to attend, she never lost her interest in the old church and insisted on having a part in all its
work. When the new building was contemplated, it was her liberality that made it possible and with her son, she joined in
the erection of the Webb Horton Memorial Presbyterian Church in memory of her late husband. She has been a loyal
supporter in all its work and especially interested in its new enterprise, the chapel for the Italians of the city on Cottage
street. To this work she has given liberally, but her benefactions have by no means been confined to her church.
Philanthropic organizations met a favorable response to every appeal and frequently unsolicited gifts were sent to these
institutions.
More than this, there were countless individual gifts, known only to herself, and to those who received them. Her life was a
benediction to many, and her death is a great loss to the community. In addition to the immediate relatives mentioned
above, she leaves a host of friends to mourn her loss.
